Weston Awards: Cary Bangs

This is the latest in our series spotlighting the 2026 winners of the Judy Weston Awards for Inspired Teaching. Follow along each week to learn more about the impact these educators are making in the Montclair Public Schools.

Cary Bangs has an amazing ability to bring learning to life for her second grade students at Bradford Elementary School. 

For example, around Thanksgiving, she had her students make shopping lists with prices, providing a practical example of how her math lessons could be used in the real world. One parent who nominated her for this award said: “My daughter comes home with dinner bills, which she made with orders and costs. Her math skills have improved dramatically. She actually enjoys math now!” 

Mrs. Bangs is also appreciated for the creative ways she celebrates learning and student growth. Parents are invited into the classroom so students can share their work. These events engage the community and help students take ownership of their learning. 

“Second grade is such an important time to cement the idea that learning is fun and that school is a positive place to be…. My son has grown academically, as well as in his confidence as a scholar under her care,” a parent said.

Another nominator wrote: “She creates an environment where children feel respected, noticed, and capable. Her celebration of learning day was incredible… The kids were able to celebrate their creativity, improvement, and hard work, and have their effort and progress recognized. She builds their self confidence and sense of worth. The pride beaming from each child (and parent) was palpable.” 

Parents also felt that Mrs. Bangs knows and understands their children well.

“I could tell she was thoughtfully curating a friend group for my shy and often introverted child, bringing her out of her shell and helping her make social connections…. When my daughter was interested in sharing a cultural holiday she celebrates, Mrs. Bangs gave us the opportunity to come into class and have our daughter share with her peers. Her self confidence and willingness to speak to a large group has dramatically improved in the safe, inclusive environment Mrs. Bangs creates.” 

Cary Bangs, for being a highly engaging teacher who uses real-world, hands-on learning and individualized support to boost students’ academic skills, confidence, and love of learning, the Montclair community is proud to honor you as an inspired teacher. Congratulations.
