When Katelynn Costello and Elizabeth Voltman, teachers at Montclair High School, wanted to incorporate more Indigenous women’s voices into their classroom, they turned to the Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence for support.
MFEE awarded them an Educational Excellence grant – the first of the 2025-26 cycle – to purchase new books for the English 10 curriculum.
The teachers told MFEE they hope the books will deepen their students’ understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences through authentic narratives that challenge mainstream perspectives.
“Engaging with the works of Indigenous author, Zitkala-Sa's American Indian Stories, will enhance [students’] critical thinking skills as they analyze complex themes of identity, culture, and American history,” Costello said. “Access to physical copies allows students to connect more deeply with the texts, encouraging thoughtful discussion and personal reflection.”
MFEE is proud to help build classroom libraries across the Montclair Public Schools that represent a wide range of voices, experiences, and storytelling. For example, last year MFEE funded books highlighting African-Americans in science at Edgemont Montessori School, expanded a 5th-grade classroom library at Northeast Elementary School, and provided resources for a Little Free Library at Charles H. Bullock school to broaden access to diverse books.
Kathy Maloy, MFEE’s grants coordinator, said she was heartened by how eager Costello and Voltman were to receive these books at MHS and to help students become more culturally responsive. “It reminded me what a special place our high school is,” Maloy said.
MFEE awards $60,000 in grants to Montclair teachers every year. These grants fund innovative tools and unique experiences – from tiny art to technology tools, creative curriculums to impactful programs. The grants process is rolling this year, so teachers can apply for funding until March 5, or when funds are allocated.
“The heart and soul of our grants program is empowering teachers and valuing their professionalism and expertise,” said Masiel Rodriquez-Vars, MFEE’s executive director. “We can’t wait to see what they dream up next.”
