New Tech Tools Boost Learning, Collaboration Across District

Last summer, when teachers across the Montclair Public Schools were writing a new technology curriculum, they realized the district was in need of tools to meet new state standards.
Nishuane teacher Donna McGowan and Bradford teacher Helena Tamasco turned to the Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence for support. They were awarded a grant to create a technology lending library, so materials could be shared across elementary schools. This idea was inspired by the Montclair State University PRISM lending library.
In their research, the team identified a hands-on coding tool designed specifically for young learners. KIBO robots are screen-free, engaging with a child's creativity to learn the fundamentals of robotics and design thinking.
The teachers were excited at the promise of KIBO, but knew it would be a significant investment. MFEE partnered with the district to fund four KIBO kits, along with comprehensive teaching materials to be shared among eight teachers.
"When we have a big project, we come to MFEE, and they have always been gracious," said Tamasco, who helped her colleagues learn about the new technology and how it could be used in classrooms.
The collaborative approach allowed teachers to standardize technology lessons across all elementary schools, ensuring every student in Montclair has access to the same high-quality learning resources.
"The way the KIBO kits are designed naturally encourages collaboration. When you introduce something like KIBO, students feel confident learning these concepts without needing to read first—it becomes their 'key into' academics,” Tamasco said. “We're constantly looking for each child's talents. We see these kids for six years, and every year we look to find that connection, whether it's coding, design thinking, or 3D design."
The KIBO project represents more than just new technology in Montclair classrooms—it's about creating pathways for every student to discover their strengths and engage with learning in meaningful ways.
Each year, MFEE provides $60,000 in grants to teachers across the district. These grants are funded in large part by MFEE's annual Toast to the Teachers events, family-hosted parties that took place in June. MFEE is thankful to everyone who hosted, attended or donated to one of these events.
