Weston Wednesday: Meet Renaissance Math Teacher Diane Tehranian

This is the latest in our “Weston Wednesday” series, spotlighting the winners of the 2024 Judy Weston Awards for Inspired Teaching. Follow along each week to learn more about the impact these educators are making in the Montclair Public Schools.

Diane Tehranian sees everyone.

She sees the seventh grader working hard to master seventh grade math.

She sees the student who is struggling and needs extra support.

She sees the burgeoning mathematician working way above grade level.

And she meets all of these students where they are, treats them with respect and helps them flourish.

Mrs. T – as she is known affectionately around the halls of Renaissance Middle School – goes above and beyond for her students, staying behind on her own time to help them if they fall behind. She creates safe spaces and invites students to spend lunch in her classroom to work on math and help each other.

One parent who nominated her for a Weston Award said: “She is a selfless and exceptional teacher who deserves recognition for her dedication and the remarkable impact she has on her students. We hold Mrs. T in high regard, we love her and appreciate all that she does.”

Another described her as “phenomenal.”

Mrs. T sets her students up for success in class and in their future, teaching them how to become good note takers and to prepare for tests. Perhaps most importantly, she makes students feel capable.

One student said: “She wants us to do well. I never liked math before, but now I see how much I need math, and also how well I can do.”

A parent said: “I am beyond grateful to Ms. Tehranian for the math skills, learning community and growth mindset that she is instilling in her students.”

Mrs. T makes all students feel seen, and the Montclair community recognizes the inspired teacher that she is.
