For Nishuane Elementary School teacher Gladys Kiernan, inclusion is at the heart of everything she does.
Ms. Kiernan – who previously provided pull-out special education services to students – now co-teaches in an inclusive classroom setting. Her colleagues see her dedication up close, and know that she strives to create a supportive environment where all students and teachers thrive.
“Her genuine passion for teaching and dedication to her students is evident in her everyday actions, and she inspires those around her to maintain the same level of commitment and care for all students,” one nominator said.
Parents and caregivers have taken notice, too.
For example, one nomination letter from a retired teacher said this: “I understand how challenging it can be to want to see every student in your room succeed, feel confident and love school while having many different learning styles and personalities. It takes a special person to stay calm, consistent and supportive while simultaneously working hard to teach a new, complicated curriculum to different kinds of learners.”
That nominator added: “My granddaughter talks now of becoming a teacher when she’s a grown up – maybe a little because of me, but I’m sure she can feel how special her teachers are making her feel, and she’d like to share that one day with other children.”
Ms. Kiernan is appreciated for championing a culture of growth, for her collaborative spirit, and commitment to student success, as well as having a positive attitude, even in challenging circumstances. It is for all these reasons, that the Montclair community has included her among this year's inspired teachers. Congratulations.
