Weston Awards: Jenna DePasquale

A word that came up repeatedly in nomination letters for Nishuane second-grade teacher Jenna DePasquale is “genuine.” It describes the care this veteran educator shows for each individual in her class, her approach to creating a learning environment that is structured, yet joyful, and her ability to bring out the best in each of her students. 

In Ms. DePasquale’s class “high expectations and fun co-exist seamlessly." One parent shared: “Seeing her interact with the students firsthand makes it clear how much she cares about them and how thoughtfully she engages with each child.”

Another said: “She has a special ability to make lessons fun while inspiring her students to stay curious and work hard. My son is always motivated in her class because she makes learning something he truly enjoys.” 

For example: “She has taken the time to truly get to know [my child] as an individual. It’s clear she sees his passion as a strength rather than a challenge. By building that personal connection, she’s made him feel like he’s a vital part of the class. He feels understood, which gives him the confidence to stay involved—even when the classroom environment gets a little hectic.” 

Ms. DePasquale was praised for understanding how students learn best and tailoring teaching to meet their needs and build on their strengths. She was recognized for her holistic approach, energy, enthusiasm, and her unique ability to “tap into the natural curiosity of her students.”  

One letter said this: “Ms. DePasquale consistently affirms the value of each student as an individual... For example, she provided my child the opportunity to share her dance recital with the class. The response from her peers celebrating and congratulating her was incredibly meaningful. Peer encouragement at this age means everything, and that kind of supportive environment does not happen by accident. This kind of positive peer culture, where students uplift one another, is intentionally cultivated and speaks volumes about the environment Ms. DePasquale creates in her classroom… Ms. DePasquale is not only an exceptional teacher, she is a transformative one.” 

For instilling a love of learning and building meaningful connections with students, and for thoughtfully supporting each child's unique strengths and growth, the Montclair community is thrilled to honor Ms. DePasquale as an inspired teacher. Congratulations.
