The Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence (MFEE) is kicking off six-weeks of summer tutoring and enrichment programming, serving 40 multilingual Montclair Public Schools students.
Now through July 26, students in grades K - 5 will dive into hands-on activities that will review concepts learned during the school year, and provide opportunities for practical application. Each day, the kids will hone the math and English-Language Arts skills essential to their academic success, and also work on fun and challenging group projects.
Each week’s activities will culminate in a local field trip to connect learning with real-world experiences. For example, this week, after designing their own playgrounds, students will enjoy time at the all-access playground at Watsessing Park in Bloomfield.
MFEE’s summer sessions are truly a community effort. Our teaching team is supported by enthusiastic volunteer tutors, who are high school and college students and other community members. Volunteer drivers help transport students to and from our learning center each day, and volunteers from Toni’s Kitchen deliver healthy lunches and snacks for all the children.
“We are so grateful to everyone who helps make these programs possible,” said Masiel Rodriquez-Vars, MFEE’s executive director. “We provide critical academic support for these young learners, but also social-emotional connections, meaningful experiences and joy.”
Starting Aug. 5, MFEE will host students in grades 6 - 12 to focus on entrepreneurship, working in teams to conceive and launch a product or service to raise money for MFEE. The summer sessions also incorporate targeted instruction in core subject areas.
In keeping with its mission to remove barriers to learning and create equitable access for all Montclair students, MFEE serves more than 80 families through the Navegadores Escolares program, helping them navigate the Montclair Public Schools, and provides after-school tutoring through our Oruguitas and Entrenadores Escolares programs.
