When you are new somewhere–to a school, a town, or even a country–finding your place and using your voice can be daunting, especially for young people who are learning a new language.

But thanks to “Rise Up, Overcoming Challenges and Finding Inner Strength,” a group of Latino middle and high school students, Kichwa Indigenous members, and Montclair State University Students will share their stories through dancing, singing, and spoken word.

The performance-based project features six students enrolled in the Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence's bilingual after-school support program. It's been a months-long collaboration, in partnership with CLaSE (Center for Latino Heritage and Spanish Language Excellence) and the Department of Theatre and Dance at MSU, and the Theatre Arts Department at Drew University.

The project's stated aim is to celebrate the diverse cultural heritage and resilience of young immigrants from Central and South America, fostering a community where voices are honored and potential is realized.

It will culminate with a performance at MSU’s L. Howard Fox Theater on April 28, at 6:30 p.m. Prior to their own show, students will have a chance to rehearse at Drew, as well as attend a dance performance for inspiration and enrichment.

Tim Anagnostis, a retired Renaissance Middle School Spanish and drama teacher who teaches at MSU, has been working closely with the students to prepare. He said some kids were initially skeptical about the idea of performing, but little by little their acts–and their artistry–has taken shape.

The performances showcase stories from countries including Honduras, Mexico, Guatemala, and more. Songs will be performed in both English and Spanish.

One student will perform an original rap, complete with a beat he created himself. A pair of girls will perform a song that is a love letter to El Salvador. A high school senior who is used to performing on a soccer field will be singing his own song. Another student is reciting an original poem about the pain and joy of love.

“You can hear a lot in their stories. You can hear wonder, fear, missing where they came from. But they’re really able to express it in so many different ways. It’s pretty amazing,” Anagnostis said. “We’re creating a space for them to express themselves in their first language.”

Some of the performers will be accompanied by MSU students, as well. And at the end of the show, they’ll all come together for a rendition of “Rise Up,” from the hit Broadway musical Hamilton.

“MFEE supports programs that leverage the arts to boost social and emotional wellness, build confidence, and provide an outlet for self-expression,” said Masiel Rodriquez-Vars, MFEE’s executive director. “To watch these young people share their experiences, with courage, vulnerability and grace, speaks to their resilience and the power of storytelling. We’re so grateful to the heart-centered educators who made this possible.”

Family, friends, and the public are invited to the show. There is no cost to attend, but donations to MFEE to support this work are welcome and appreciated.
