If you asked Buzz Aldrin Middle School students to describe a great teacher, you might hear things like this:

“He is super nice.”

“He helps everyone, not just people in his study skills class.”

“He makes class feel better. He doesn’t just stand there and talk the whole time.”

“He is good at explaining all things. He helps me focus when I'm struggling, so learning doesn’t feel confusing or frustrating.”

“He has helped me understand many topics that I would have failed a test without.”

“If you went to the bathroom or to get water, he would fill you in on what you missed.”

And, “He knows how to relate to us. He is not mean. He can teach very well, and at the same time, he "Stands on Business." He can even make usually boring subjects 10x better.”

Well, that’s exactly what kids wrote about Luke Fess when they nominated him for this award. Our selection committee was moved by all those authentic student voices. One student went so far as to write: “Mr. Luke Fess is, by far, one of the greatest teachers to step foot in the district.”

But Mr. Fess’ stellar reputation extends to grown-ups, too. One parent who nominated him for this award said he has a unique ability to connect with every student by taking the time to understand their individual interests, strengths, and challenges, making each child feel seen and supported. "He leads with humor, humility, and genuine empathy, creating a classroom where students feel comfortable learning, asking questions, and growing…. We feel incredibly fortunate that both of our boys had the opportunity to learn from him.”

He is also appreciated for organizing cool field trips and experiences for the gifted and talented program, and for teaching creative ELA lessons on folk tales and mythical creatures.

For being an exceptional teacher who motivates students, making them feel good and smart, and for providing clear explanations, genuine care, and humor that lands with his audience, the Montclair community is proud to honor Mr. Fess as an inspired teacher. Congratulations.
