The Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence wrapped up its summer enrichment program for multilingual elementary school learners last week with a carnival of games conceived, designed and built by students themselves.
The games – crafted from upcycled materials and students’ imaginations – were the culmination of three weeks of learning, including math, language arts and problem-solving concepts. The curriculum provided hands-on activities for students to review skills learned during the school year, and gave them opportunities for practical application. Students were assisted by an enthusiastic team of volunteer tutors (Montclair high school students and other community members).
“The kids had so much fun creating these games, and we were so impressed by their creativity, problem solving, and teamwork,” said Rachell Arteaga, MFEE’s director of learning design.

The students, who are enrolled in grades K - 5 in Montclair Public Schools, got to demonstrate their creations to their peers and play their classmates' games, as well. To celebrate all that they accomplished, the kids took a field trip to a local arcade, too.
While filled with fun, the programs have a lasting impact on students.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the wonderful support you have provided to my son this summer. I am deeply impressed by the dedication and commitment of the teachers and the entire staff to help each child develop his or her abilities to the fullest," parent Yoselins Rios said. “Since we arrived in this country, your guidance and support have been invaluable to us. The activities and trips organized have been an enriching and learning-filled experience for my son. Thank you for your tireless efforts and for creating an environment where children feel cared for and motivated to grow.” (This quotation was translated to English from Spanish).
MFEE’s programming for middle and high school students begins August 5, and a summer math intensive is also underway to prepare students to succeed in algebra and geometry.
This work is in keeping with our organization’s mission to remove barriers to learning and create equitable access for all Montclair students. MFEE serves more than 80 non-English-speaking families through the Navegadores Escolares program, helping them navigate the Montclair Public Schools, and provides after-school and summer tutoring through our Oruguitas and Entrenadores Escolares programs.
