Montclair is a community rich in resources and committed to high quality, racially integrated public education. One of MFEEs primary functions is to help channel these resourcesnot only financial, but also intellectual, cultural, and social resourcesfor the benefit of its students. To this end, MFEE has been instrumental in the development of several initiatives, each based on a model that convenes constituents from throughout Montclair with a common goal of improving local public education. The role of MFEE in each of these initiatives varies somewhat, but is central to all of them. MFEE staff and board members have chaired and served on committees to establish and guide these initiatives, raised and administered funds to support their activities, and contributed expertise in the development of their goals and programs. This function of bringing together schools and the communities they serve is fundamental to MFEEs mission, and to the success of all local education funds. The Public Education Network (PEN) calls it convening the stakeholders. In Montclair, its a formula for success. Childrens Literature Initiative Provides appropriate and high quality book collections for elementary and middle school libraries, as well as giving books to incoming MPS high school freshmen to read over the summer. IMANI (Improving Montclairs Achievement Network Initiative) Provides year-round supplementary academic services for minority students aimed at eliminating the performance gap and raise acheivement levels for all MPS students. Raises funds and develops programs to improve school athletic facilities, expand the selection of sports offered, and help student athletes manage their commitments. A new initiative to enhance the visual and performing arts programs in grades K-12. Researches and makes recommendations to the school superintendents office on policies and practices with the potential for system-wide impact. Health and Wellness Initiative Raises funds and develops programs to improve students physical, mental, and emotional health, including producing the Community Resource Guide, awarding grants, sponsoring events, and securing pro bono counseling services for students in need. After-School Community Tutoring Program Coordinates five community-based tutoring programs, each of which is supervised by an MPS teacher and staffed by student volunteers from Montclair State University. Weston Engineering Collaborative Develops resources for and implements new programs in engineering education at Montclair High School, including a state-of-the-art lab, teacher training, and a partnership with Pfizer. Recruits and trains volunteers to assist students with their writing skills. This program has received acclaim from the Annenberg Institute for School Reform, the Tristate Standards Commission, and the Education Trust. David Greenwald Challenge Course Provides opportunities for leadership, team and personal development training, available to MHS students as well as others in the community, through an outdoors ropes course. This past year, management of the Course was assumed by the Montclair YMCA. |
