The Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence (MFEE) was founded in 1991 to generate private funding and community support for Montclair’s public schools and to enhance the educational experience of all of Montclair’s public school students. It operates on a model common to all Local Education Funds (LEFs) in which collaboration—between educators, families and individuals, community groups and local businesses—forms the foundation for all programs and progress.

Since its inception, MFEE has grown from a small organization distributing a handful of grants for teacher-initiated projects in the classroom, to an established, yet still streamlined, resource for improving public education in Montclair. Its accomplishments include the following:

  • Distribution of grants to teachers for innovative projects that have a direct impact on students and their educational experience. In its 2004-2005 fiscal year, MFEE issued 139 grants totalling almost $130,000.
  • Development of several major district-wide initiatives with far-reaching impacts, including the Children’s Literature Initiative, the True Blue Spirit Athletic Improvement Initiative, the After-School Community Tutoring Program, IMANI, and the District Leadership Team.
  • Sponsoring and co-sponsoring major fundraising events, including Dog Day Montclair, the All-Adult Spelling Bee, Toast to the Teachers, and the Montclair Gourmet Kitchen Tour.
  • Development of dedicated funding streams for innovative and on-going programs, including the Social Problem Solving program funded by the Turner Family Foundation, Professional Development grants funded by the Greenwald Memorial Fund and the Greenwald family, the Weston Engineering Collaborative at Montclair High School, funded by Josh and Judy Weston.
  • Raised major financial support of its grants and district-wide initiatives entirely from private sources. In its 2004-2005 fiscal year, MFEE raised over $1.2 million (over half of which was dedicated for the True Blue Spirit Athletic Improvement Initiative for capital improvements of athletic facilities at Montclair High School.)
